Department of Aerospace Engineering | Indian Institute Of Technology Madras , Chennai

Ballistics and Missiles

The department undertakes multidisciplinary research on advanced defence and aerospace systems, ranging from smart and ramjet-assisted artillery projectiles, and rockets to precision inertial navigation systems and unmanned aerial platforms for diverse applications. The work integrates interior, exterior and terminal ballistics, high-speed aerodynamics, propulsion, guidance and control, navigation, structural design, embedded electronics and flight mechanics. The department’s specialized experimental infrastructure supports projectile launching, high-acceleration testing and controlled recovery of onboard systems for post-test evaluation. Combining computational modelling, wind-tunnel experiments, ground testing and firing trials, these programmes span the complete development cycle, from fundamental research and concept design to prototype realization and technology demonstration, in collaboration with defence laboratories, industry and the Armed Forces.
