With its hub at IIT Madras, GFL is a conglomerate of academic and industrial researchers from around the world. GFL is envisaged as a centre with a unified approach, combining field measurements, climate modelling and laboratory modelling (theory/simulations/experiments towards geophysical flows.
While significant recent progress has been achieved in physical oceanography, laboratory studies, and numerical ocean & atmospheric modelling, a synergistic approach combining the three is the need of the hour. At GFL, we rigorously combine (i) new fine-scale field measurements, (ii) fine-scale laboratory (experimental/numerical/theoretical) modelling of upper ocean physical processes, and (iii) large-scale coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling to improve our understanding of air-sea interactions in the northern Indian Ocean, especially the poorly observed/understood coastal regions.
Another thrust area of GFL is fine-scale process modelling in the lab, via experiments, simulations and theoretical modelling, of small-scale processes influencing the upper ocean structure in the …
At GFL, we perform coupled ocean-atmosphere climate modelling (sensitivity experiments and data assimilation) based on inputs from field experiments and fine-scale process modelling to progress …
GFL aims at a targeted survey of the coastal regions of the northern Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal in the first phase, expanding towards the Arabian Sea in the second phase) using state-of-the-art …
